Cross Validated is a question and answer site for statisticians, data analysts, data miners and data visualization experts. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Please, this is maybe a meta-statistics question but let me ask this. What would you tell a mathematician to answer the question:

"Mention few examples what kind of data analysis the insurance companies or banks do?" Something a la "They have the set of claims and compute the mean."... (obviously a stupid example).

For insurance companies, you could read Wikipedia's article on actuarial science and Actuary. – onestop Mar 19 '12 at 13:00
