Cross Validated is a question and answer site for people interested in statistics, machine learning, data analysis, data mining, and data visualization. It's 100% free, no registration required.

How to estimate the out crosses rate in crops? in have experiment included; main plot (1- seeds from open field 2- seeds from free pollinators cage 3-seeds from pollinator cage), sub plot (5 genotypes) and 50 plants grown for each genotype in each plot. This in three replications. It easy to estimate variance between main plots and sub plots but my question about the genetic variance between plants in same plot. and this will be due to out cross.

Welcome to the site, @EhabElharty. I cannot understand your question. Can you edit it to clarify the English? –  gung Jan 14 '13 at 19:41

If it helps anyone else answer this, out-crossing is a synonym for hybridisation. From an experimental point of view I would like to know 1) that the specified genotypes are pure bred and not subject to natural variation as a result of meiosis and crossing over. 2) how varied were the genotypes in the open field, ideally what they were, what proportion of each, and were any the same as those in the plots 3) what and how many other genotypes were available to the free pollinators cage I am not a statistics guru but it looks like a study between and within subjects about which others could advis –  Robert Jones Jan 15 '13 at 13:16

I empathize w/ the frustration in not being able to comment, nonetheless, it is not appropriate to use the "Your Answer" field to do so. You will be able to comment when you reach 50 rep. I suspect you can get there soon enough, your comment seems clearly thought through. –  gung Jan 15 '13 at 14:07

Thanks for your rapid reply, the crop is faba bean (Vicia faba L.) it known in middle east and in other country by different names. it self pollination crop but honey bees (pollinators) visit faba bean flowers lead to increase the inter and intra crosses. In this investigation I am looking to study the differences between six cultivars in their ability to increase its seed yield by increase the out crosses and Plant characteristics lead to increases honey bees visit. The six cultivars grown in open field, with and without pollinators (three locations) in Randomized Complete Block design. –  Ehab Elharty Jan 15 '13 at 18:19

@EhabElharty You should edit the additional information into your original question and ask a specific, clear question, or your question may be closed as not being a real question. –  Glen_b Jan 16 '13 at 6:05
