So, the general approach is subtract the mean and divide by the standard deviation; that is, $x_{new} = \frac{x - \mu}{\sigma}$. You can use the code in this SO answer to standardize your data.

Ah, I am very sorry then, but your estimation that research has dropped off is most likely correct. However, as I'm sure it seems to you, it seems likely to me that the multivariate case would at least be as impacted by seasonality/trend as the univariate, if not more so.

@Glen_b, I think the OP wants to know if it is possible to separate their set of words into 2 classes: words which have roughly the same count in both groups and words which don't. They don't know how to identify the group of words which don't have roughly the same count and moreover do not know how to define the term 'roughly'.

You may want to read a more in-depth tutorial than the Wikipedia page. 'A Tutorial on Hidden Markov Models and Selected Applications in Speech Recognition' link by Lawrence Rabiner seems to be a good choice. Another, shorter work that is also a good introduction to the subject is 'What is a hidden Markov model?' by Sean Eddy.

@Abbas, some questions: are the 10 individuals and the cell lines surveyed the same in both expression and methylation studies? If so, do the methylation and expression studies survey roughly the same time point in the cell cycle, if that is relevant (i.e. methylation as pertains to meiosis)?

That's what I thought. I think you underestimate the quantity of people on this site conversant in subject-specific areas such as biology. Please describe in more detail, as your comment 'which treatment' suggests that there are multiple treatments, which I cannot map onto your initial problem of 1 hospital, 1 measurement of doctor absenteeism.
