I think this is pretty much it. The discrepancy for values > 36 might be algorithmic, but maybe loess() can be adjusted to produce predictions between -0.5 and 0.5 (as in the SAS plot) instead of -0.5 and 1.5 (as in the R plot) (all values just roughly inferred from the plots).
