The solution shows this: The probability needs to be calculated for each total number of claims. 0: 0.5(0.2) = 0.10, 1: 0.5(0.3) + 0.3(0.2) = 0.21 , 2: 0.5(0.4) + 0.3(0.3) + 0.2(0.2) = 0.33 , 3: 0.5(0.1) + 0.3(0.4) + 0.2(0.3) + 0.0(0.2) = 0.23 At this point there is only 0.13 probability remaining, so the mode must be at 2.
I don't understand how they got 0.5(0.3) + 0.3(0.2) for total claim for 1, can someone explain how they got these numbers and did this calculation?
