I am applying Design of Experiment principles to create a split-plot experiment that involves several hard-to-change (HTC) factors. I am finding that creating a single experiment covering all the HTC factors requires many whole plots to have a reasonable estimated power.

When does it make sense to instead separate the experiment into several smaller experiments, each looking at one HTC factor? What are the trade-offs?
