I'm running a One Way within subject ANOVA in R as follow:

 testSlopeOneW=aov(Slope~Confidence+Error(Subject/Confidence),dat)

Subject and Confidence are factors, Slope isn't. The output that R gave me is the following

summary(testSlopeOneW)

Error: Subject
Df Sum Sq Mean Sq F value Pr(>F)
Confidence 1 1.571e-05 1.571e-05 0.749 0.407
Residuals 10 2.097e-04 2.097e-05

Error: Subject:Confidence
Df Sum Sq Mean Sq F value Pr(>F)
Confidence 1 3.402e-05 3.402e-05 8.43 0.0144 *
Residuals 11 4.440e-05 4.040e-06
---
Signif. codes: 0 ‘***’ 0.001 ‘**’ 0.01 ‘*’ 0.05 ‘.’ 0.1 ‘ ’ 1

Error: Within
Df Sum Sq Mean Sq F value Pr(>F)
Residuals 23 0.0001728 7.515e-06

Two things here that I don't understand: First what is the ouptu below the line Error:Within. Second why is there a line with confidence in the section Error:Subject.

In my mind this line was the between subject variance and the following was the within subject variance

Thank you in advance.

  • $\begingroup$ Each error term gets it's own residual error, the Error Within is the model residual. $\endgroup$ – user2974951 Dec 4 '18 at 8:39
