I have a time series that has too many points. I sample one in every 100 points, in order to reduce the amount of data I need to transmit from my measurement device.

What accuracy metric can I use to calculate how well the sampled data represents the raw data? Cross correlation seems to need the same number of points.

Would this method also work if I had a sampling algorithm that selected randomly between every 100 points?
