Is the Mahalanobis distance using correlations or covariances (among two vectors) to determine the similarity? I know that both are quite the same and differ only by a division of a standard deviation - but which of both drives the Mahalanobis distance?

From my understanding it should be covariance but in articles I often read both terms in a mixed way.
