I want to use STATA to analyse the determinants of fertility. My dependent variable is the number of children born from a woman.

Is it possible to use an ordered logit or probit when the variables of the dependent variable are not ordinal in nature?

Also, the number of children ever born takes values from 1 to 15, but I want to reduce the categories to 5, how do I do that in STATA?

  • $\begingroup$ I do not know why you specifically want to use an ordered model, but sure it is possible. You could group the values of your dependent variable this way. $\endgroup$ – Lucas Farias Feb 16 at 11:48
