# Why do we rely on the standard error? [duplicate]

I cannot come to terms with the fact that the standard error is used to describe the accuracy of a point estimate. For example, when making inferences from a sampling distribution about the accuracy with which the sample mean estimates the population mean, we rely on the standard error. Wouldn't the standard deviation of the sampling distribution be just as appropriate if not more so at indicating the accuracy of the sample mean?

In other words, why use the $$n^{\frac{1}{2}}$$ in the denominator of the standard error calculation?
