It shows patients (record_id, anonymized), aneurysm size (anSize), an adverse effect (neurotromb), treatment option (treatmentChoice) and some adjusting baseline variables.

I'm interested to know whether choice of treatment has an effect on the adverse effect neurotromb.

As we are arranging by aneurysms (patients can have more than 1 aneurysm) we run a mixed model, grouping by record_id.

This is my code in R:

I'm not entirely sure if the model can be used or not or if these are absolute errors? It runs fine if I dichotomize treatmentChoice into either one type of treatment or the other, but the treatmentChoice variable is nicely distributed so I wouldn't think I'd have to.

The model has not converged to a solution, so you should not uses the output from this model.

This is probably related to the dataset having a large proportion of singleton clusters. A few things to try are:

• try the other optimisers avalable in lme4
• try setting nAGQ greater than 1
• refit the model using a range of starting values
• try using GLMMAdaptive, brms, glmmTMB and other packages

If all the above fails then you could split the dataset into two - one part for all the singleton clusters and fit it a linear model (with lm in R) on those, and the other part with a mixed model package.

• How come the model gives an output if it has not converged to a solution? In other softwares I've used they refuse to give any sort of output.

• Unfortunately I am not the author of the package so I couldn't say, but the hint is in the message Model failed to converge.
