Please provide your input on what kind of sampling methodology is followed here.

  • Data being collected for a questionnaire.
  • the sample population consists of people in employment and IT professionals
  • they were targeted by sending mails and posting messages on professional groups on social media sites.

what sampling method would this be ?

Its not random sampling because chose only to invite people on professional groups and discussion forums for IT professionals.

  • $\begingroup$ This kind of question is not of direct use in any application, so I presume it is a self-study question for which guidance--rather than a direct answer--is sought. What sampling methods do you know of and which one of those do you suppose this is? $\endgroup$ – whuber Nov 27 '13 at 21:47

  • $\begingroup$ There is nothing like purposive sampling. one should understand the target population. How many are there and for how many you sent your questionnaire for being filled in. Even if it is a convenience sample, you should move ahead provided you have a large number of responses say 500 or more $\endgroup$ – Subhash C. Davar Nov 28 '13 at 16:02
