There are actually two questions from the OP, posed as one (at least, as I see it). The first is (1) Can a person without a PhD do meaningful work in industry in data-mining and/or machine learning? The answer is undoubtedly affirmative. The second is (2) Can one obtain such a position with limited experience in the area and without a PhD (and how hard is it to accomplish this)? Even though the second is probably easier to measure quantitatively, it seems to have more grey area. | |
