But this time correlation has nothing to do with the 2 time series being independent from each other. The time is the same for x1 and x2, so the ith score or entry of the variable x1 should be in the same row of the model matrix than the ith score of the variable x2. I do not see why this violates the assumption that the time series are independent. If in doubt, calculate the cross-correlation.
