Unbalanced groups should not be a problem if you estimate your mixed effects by REML. However, the model lmer(growth ~ length + period:treatment + (1 | site)) violates the principle of marginality. You should use period * treatment instead. (x1 * x2 is the same as x1 + x2 + x1:x2)
