Feb 22, 2017 at 22:43 comment added Carl @NickCox +1 You have a sense of humor in addition to a well rounded education, "All puns and wordplay here should be considered intentional even when accidental" indeed. Nice, I could stand some cheering up about now.

May 22, 2015 at 22:02 comment added usεr11852 The vowel in "oik" is a homophone with "choice", the first vowel in "oikos" is essentially like "bead". (Obvious +1 to Nick for this post.)
May 22, 2015 at 21:49 comment added usεr11852 @cardinal: scope. Latinising the greek word "σκοπιά" (tr. viewpoint or sentry depending on the context) would probably get you at "skope"; nevertheless especially for small non-composite words regional phonetic rules come into play more strongly so I would assume that "scope" is a safe bet.
May 22, 2015 at 14:38 comment added cardinal Wait! Plenty of scope or plenty of skope? (+1)
May 22, 2015 at 14:27 comment added Nick Cox Indeed: "oik" was commonly used British slang a few decades ago although now does not seem so widely used. However, the term "ecology" was introduced in a German form in the mid-19th century and I think translated as "ecology" several decades ago.
