Thanks a lot @GavinSimpson, it is a very helpful explanation! The inclusion of the uncertainty of the smoothing parameters estimation makes perfect sense, and also I didn't know about that scaling of the LR. Now I'd like to know what is so substatially wrong with the first derivation using log-likelihoods (except the same issues I had with the second one).
