In fact, it seems that the anova(model, type = 3) function is actually using type 2 SS, which we can verify by running anova(model, type = 2). … To show that lmerTest::anova() is in fact using type 2 SS rather than the type 3 SS it displays in its output we can use the Anova() function from the car package. …
